Avoiding Heat Exhaustion During Your Travels

Going on a holiday usually means journeying to places where you get the most sun, enjoy balmy weather, and work on your tan. Or maybe you can get behind the wheel and go on a road trip with friends or family. You get to free yourself of the sight of overcast skies and thickly-clothed people and wear your brightest t-shirt.

Whichever destination or country you go, especially if these are in a tropical region and you travel during the summer, you need to ensure that you are fit and in the peak of health before, during, and after your getaway. Otherwise, you will be better off holidaying in the comfort of your own living room.

There are many little hazards that you should be aware of while you are away, such as food hygiene, water, and insect bites, but one that is generally overlooked is heatstroke. You definitely need to take extra care when you are travelling to areas having warmer climes, especially if you live in places having cold weather for the most part of the year. There are many ways to avoid heatstroke, which hopefully will make your holiday more enjoyable.

  • Keep yourself hydrated
  • Drink two litres of bottled water daily. Increase this quantity if you stayed out in the open sea or direct sunlight for long periods of time. It is best to consume liquids at all time, not just when you are thirsty. Avoid taking coffee or alcohol as they do dehydrate you more quickly.

  • Stay indoors during the hottest part of the day
  • If you don't want to miss out on the fun or if your tour happens to take place at crucial hours (10am-3pm), do keep to the shade as much as possible.

  • Wear wide-brimmed hats and light clothing
  • In direct sunlight such as sea, open areas, beaches, parks, and landmarks, hats should be worn covering as much as possible of your head, neck and shoulders. Beach umbrellas are great for creating large areas of shades or even a small one for walking around the streets of a quaint town.

If you are taking a road trip, make sure you have reflectors or material which you can use to cover the rear and side windows and protect passengers from having their skin burned by the sun.
