Steps to Maintain Venetian Blinds
If you plan on installing horizontal screens on your windows, it is important that you clean them regularly. This is because they tend to collect dirt due to their constant exposure to air pollutants. For every day cleaning, you can simply wipe a damp cloth along all the slats. However, it is also important that once a month you clear up all the other components. One way of tidying this type of window covering is by placing it in a bathtub since it has ample room. However, if you do not have one at home, then you can also use a large circular wash basin. With that said, here are the steps you need to follow:
- Detach the blinds from the window the same way it was installed in the first place. It all depends on how these are being held up in the window. If necessary, use a screwdriver.
- Cover the tub or basin with old towels and on the floor. Afterwards, fill about 5 inches of warm water and pour in squirts of dish soap. Adequately mix with your hands but try not create too many suds.
- Carefully place the blinds, slats closed and extended into the container. Allow it to soak for at least 15 minutes. Afterwards, scrub one slat at a time. It would be best if you use a brush with soft bristles in order to penetrate tight corners.
- Drain the water and use the shower (or a hose in the case of a laundry basin) to rinse off the soap.
- Gently remove the blinds from the container, place them in an area lined with old towels, and allow them to air dry. The position must be slanted on the sides in order to drain excess fluid. Wait 20 minutes before you flip onto the other side. If you want to speed up the process, you can gently wipe of the excess fluid with a soft rag.
- Finally, re-attach the Venetian blinds back in position on the windows. Make sure they are open so that you can wipe a cloth along the top and bottom portion of each slat. Keep them open for several more minutes to make sure they are completely dry.
